If you're looking for the absolute cheapest entry into audiophile sound, you can't beat headphones and our favourite is the affordably priced Beyerdynamic DT440. Works great with everything from the iPod to expensive headphone amps so you can always upgrade later. Comfortable and well-built, these are immensely satisfying.

Level 2
For students, people with little space, or those who spend a lot of time at the computer, headphones can be the best route. The Beyerdynamic DT990 are equivalent to a $2000 pair of speakers with naturally judged sound, detail and bass that you could never get in a small room. Powered by the great little Pro-Ject Head Box MKII, they are a joy to listen to.

Level 3
Same headphones as Level 2 but with a much better headphone amplifier. The Graham Slee Novo is 80% as good as the Solo for half the money. Very linear, wide bandwidth, great soundstaging and able to drive any difficult load.

Level 4
The 600 ohm version of the DT990 is slightly more accurate than the 250 or 32 ohm which is why we switch to it with this higher package. The Graham Slee solo is about as good as headphone amps get. It has no sound of it's own, just clean pure amplification of the source. It really brings the 990s alive.
